A Few Of Our Reviews
”Nice stroll into town/ harbour”
”Very friendly people room always clean lovely breakfast of anything you want easy parking a nice stroll into town/ harbour and bus route on seafront glad we picked this guest house”
”Everything just right”
”Everything just right for a B&B stay and I appreciated the free wi-fi and the skimmed milk sachets for tea in the bedroom – just happen to be the type I like. To select just one of the other excellent aspects: quietness. This was in contrast to some other places nearby with a bar and blaring music. Many thanks to Ken, Isobel and daughter Ashley”
‘‘Everything you could want”
”Everything you could want from an efficiently run family b and b. Clean, comfy bed, pleasantly decorated en-suite room, deliciously freshly cooked breakfast by Ken, swiftly served by Ashleigh”

How to Find Parking in Torquay Without the Fuss

Arriving in Torquay should feel like the start of a proper seaside break, not a slow crawl around one-way streets looking for a space. Knowing how to find parking in Torquay before you set off makes a real difference, particularly in school holidays, sunny weekends and during local events.
The good news is that visitors have plenty of options. The less helpful news is that the most convenient spaces near the harbour, beaches and town centre are often the first to fill. A little planning lets you park up, unpack and get on with enjoying the English Riviera.
How to find parking in Torquay before you arrive
Start by deciding how much you expect to use your car once you are here. If you are planning to explore Torquay on foot, spend time around the seafront or take local transport to nearby resorts, a stay with its own parking can be the easiest option. You avoid moving the car each morning, checking ticket times and returning before a stay limit runs out.
If you are staying in the centre or close to the harbour, look at the nearest public car parks in advance and check their current charges, opening arrangements and maximum stay. Council parking information and signs at the entrance should always be your final check, as tariffs and restrictions can change. Do not rely on an old online review or a photograph of a ticket machine.
It also helps to save the postcode of your accommodation and one nearby car park before leaving home. Mobile signal is generally good around Torquay, but it is far nicer to have a back-up plan than to search while holding up traffic on a narrow hill.
Choose accommodation with parking if convenience matters
For many guests, free on-site parking is worth more than being a few minutes closer to the harbour. It is especially useful if you are travelling with children, bringing a dog, carrying beach equipment or simply prefer not to tackle steep walks with bags.
At a smaller guest house, parking spaces may need to be allocated and availability can be limited, so it is sensible to ask when booking rather than assume. At Tor Dean Guest House, free parking is one of the practical comforts that helps guests settle in and explore without daily parking worries.
A parked car also gives you flexibility. You can walk to dinner or the seafront, then use the car another day for Babbacombe, Cockington, Paignton or a trip further into Devon. The right base can make a car feel useful without making it the centre of your holiday.
The best times to park in Torquay
Timing has a bigger effect than many visitors expect. In peak season, central spaces can disappear by late morning, particularly when the weather is warm. Harbour-side areas, popular beaches and attractions draw day visitors as well as holidaymakers.
If you need a public car park close to the town centre, arriving earlier in the day is usually the calmer choice. Alternatively, spaces may become available later in the afternoon as day visitors head home. Neither approach is guaranteed, but both are often easier than arriving around lunchtime on a bright Saturday.
Evening parking can be more straightforward, though you still need to read the signs carefully. Charges, permitted hours and overnight rules vary by location. Never assume that a space which is unrestricted after a certain time can be left there until the following afternoon.
Bank holidays, school holiday weeks and major events are the times to allow extra patience. Build 20 or 30 minutes into your arrival plans, particularly if you are due to check in at a particular time. That small allowance can prevent an otherwise pleasant journey ending in a rush.
Public car parks, street parking and park-and-ride
Torquay has a mixture of council-operated and private car parks, along with limited on-street bays. Each has its place, but they suit different kinds of visit.
Public car parks are generally the most straightforward choice for a day in the town centre, harbour or seafront area. They are easier to find than a vacant street space and usually provide clear payment instructions. Check whether payment is by machine, app or both, and keep enough phone charge to pay if an app is required. If using a machine, retain your ticket if one is issued and make sure your registration number has been entered correctly.
On-street parking can be handy for a short stop, but it is not always the best answer for a full day. Bays may have short maximum stays, resident permit controls, loading restrictions or time-specific rules. The sign closest to where you park is the one that matters. A bay on the next street can operate differently.
During busier periods, consider parking a little farther from the busiest waterfront spots and walking the final stretch. Torquay is hilly in places, so this depends on your mobility and what you are carrying. For some people, a ten-minute level walk is preferable to searching for a closer space. For others, especially guests with limited mobility, it is better to prioritise a car park with suitable access and plan the route carefully.
Park-and-ride services can also be useful when available for seasonal demand or particular events. Check the current local arrangements before travelling, as services are not necessarily year-round.
Avoid the common parking mistakes
Most parking problems are avoidable. They tend to happen when visitors are understandably focused on reaching the beach, finding lunch or getting checked in.
First, do not park on instinct. Yellow lines, bays and signs can be easy to miss when the road is unfamiliar, and restrictions may apply on days or at times that are not immediately obvious. Take a moment to read the full notice before walking away.
Second, give yourself more time than the journey planner suggests. Torquay’s roads can become busy, and sat-nav directions do not always account for the time needed to find a space. If your accommodation has an arrival window, let your hosts know if traffic or parking is delaying you.
Third, think about the length of your stay. A cheap short-stay option may become expensive or inconvenient if you need to return to move the car. For an overnight break, secure longer-stay parking or on-site parking is often better value once the hassle is considered.
Finally, leave valuables out of sight and lock the vehicle properly, as you would anywhere. A holiday is more relaxing when bags, coats and beach gear are not on display.
Make the most of Torquay once the car is parked
One of the pleasures of staying in a well-located part of Torquay is that you do not need to drive everywhere. The seafront, restaurants, cafés, shops and many attractions can be reached on foot from central and near-seafront accommodation. Walking also means you can enjoy an unhurried meal or a drink without having to think about driving back.
For days out, plan one direction at a time rather than repeatedly crossing town by car. Pair a visit to Cockington with a relaxed afternoon, or keep a coastal walk and a beach visit together. This saves fuel, reduces parking costs and leaves more time for the things you came to see.
If mobility is a concern, choose routes and attractions that suit your needs rather than assuming every seafront walk is flat. Torquay has lovely views partly because of its slopes, and a taxi or local bus can be a sensible choice for the uphill return.
Parking need not be the part of your break you remember. Book a comfortable base with a clear parking plan, check restrictions on the day, and give yourself a little extra time on busy arrivals. Then you can leave the car where it belongs for much of the holiday and enjoy Torquay at a gentler pace.
