A Few Of Our Reviews

”Nice stroll into town/ harbour”

”Very friendly people room always clean lovely breakfast of anything you want easy parking a nice stroll into town/ harbour and bus route on seafront glad we picked this guest house”

”Everything just right”

”Everything just right for a B&B stay and I appreciated the free wi-fi and the skimmed milk sachets for tea in the bedroom – just happen to be the type I like. To select just one of the other excellent aspects: quietness. This was in contrast to some other places nearby with a bar and blaring music. Many thanks to Ken, Isobel and daughter Ashley”

‘‘Everything you could want”

”Everything you could want from an efficiently run family b and b. Clean, comfy bed, pleasantly decorated en-suite room, deliciously freshly cooked breakfast by Ken, swiftly served by Ashleigh”

Where to Stay in Torquay Without a Car for Ease

Where to Stay in Torquay Without a Car for Ease

A car is useful for reaching the quieter corners of South Devon, but it is not essential for a relaxed Torquay holiday. If you are deciding where to stay in Torquay without a car, choose an area that keeps the seafront, restaurants, shops and transport within an easy walk - and remember that the town is hillier than it can appear on a map.

For most visitors, the best base is between Torquay railway station, the seafront and the harbour. This part of town gives you the greatest freedom to arrive, settle in and enjoy your break without having to plan every journey around a taxi or bus timetable.

Stay near the seafront for the easiest days out

The seafront around Torre Abbey Sands and Abbey Sands is one of the most convenient choices for visitors arriving by train. Torquay railway station is close by, so you can walk to your accommodation after arriving with luggage rather than arranging onward transport.

From here, the promenade makes for a pleasant, mostly level route towards the harbour. You will find cafés, restaurants, bars and the beach along the way, while Torre Abbey and its gardens are also nearby. It is a particularly practical area for couples, solo travellers and anyone who would rather spend their holiday strolling than tackling steep climbs.

Staying close to the seafront also works well if you plan to use local buses or take boat trips from the harbour. You have plenty to do within walking distance, and a short bus journey can take you further along the English Riviera when you fancy a change of scene.

The trade-off is that rooms closest to the waterfront can be busier, especially in summer and during school holidays. If you prefer a quieter night but still want to walk everywhere, look a little back from the promenade rather than right on it.

Belgravia and the station area offer a practical balance

The streets between the railway station, Torre Abbey and the seafront are a sensible choice for a car-free stay. They are close enough to make arrival simple, yet usually feel more residential than the immediate harbourfront. Many traditional guest houses in this area offer the things that make a short break straightforward: a comfortable room, en-suite facilities, breakfast and local advice from people who know the town.

It is worth checking the exact walking route before booking. Torquay has slopes, and a property described as being near the seafront may still involve a climb on the return journey. That will not trouble everyone, but it matters if you have limited mobility, young children, a pram or simply prefer an easier walk after dinner.

A family-run guest house such as Tor Dean Guest House can suit visitors who want a welcoming base near the seafront and town without the formality of a larger hotel. Breakfast on site is especially useful without a car: it means your day starts well before you decide whether to walk, catch a bus or take a boat.

The harbour and town centre are best for evening choice

Torquay Harbour and the town centre are ideal if your priority is being close to restaurants, pubs, independent shops and the marina. The harbour is at the heart of Torquay’s evening life, and staying nearby means you can enjoy a meal or a drink without worrying about getting back late.

This location is also handy for harbour cruises, fishing trips and buses serving several parts of the bay. For a classic seaside break built around the marina, people-watching and easy access to places to eat, it is hard to beat.

However, the harbour is not right for every traveller. It can be livelier and noisier than accommodation nearer Torre Abbey, particularly at weekends. Some rooms around the harbour may also be above restaurants or on streets with evening footfall. If a peaceful night is important, choose accommodation on a quieter side street or slightly uphill from the centre, while checking how far the walk is.

Babbacombe suits a slower, self-contained stay

Babbacombe is a lovely option for guests who want a quieter village-like feel, striking coastal views and a good choice of local cafés and pubs. The area has its own small centre, Babbacombe Downs and access towards Oddicombe Beach, so you can enjoy several days there without needing a car.

It is not as central for Torquay harbour or the main railway station, though. You will likely use a bus or taxi for some journeys, and the route down to the beach is steep. The cliff railway can make the descent easier when it is operating, but it should not be the only part of your plan.

Choose Babbacombe if you are happy to stay largely in one attractive part of the bay and do not mind using public transport for the occasional trip. It can be an excellent fit for a peaceful couples’ break, but less convenient for first-time visitors who want to see the whole of central Torquay on foot.

Wellswood is attractive, but consider the hills

Wellswood has a smart, leafy feel and is well placed for walking to Meadfoot Beach, Kents Cavern and parts of the coast path. Its small parade of shops, cafés and places to eat gives the area a useful local centre.

The important consideration is the terrain. Wellswood sits above the harbour, so the walk back from town can be uphill. For confident walkers, that may be part of the appeal. For anyone who wants flat, easy routes from breakfast to beach to dinner, the seafront or station area will usually be more comfortable.

Plan around how you like to spend a holiday

The right location depends less on whether you have a car and more on what you want your days to look like. If you want to arrive by train, walk along the promenade, eat out each evening and visit the harbour, stay near Torquay station, Torre Abbey or the seafront. If nightlife and dining are top of the list, the harbour and town centre put you closest to the action.

For a quieter coastal break, Babbacombe or Wellswood may appeal more, provided you are comfortable with buses, taxis and hills. Families should also think about the walk back after a beach day, particularly with bags, towels and tired children. A slightly less central room with an easy route can be better than a closer one at the top of a steep road.

Getting around Torquay without driving

Torquay is manageable without a car because many of its best-known attractions are clustered around the bay. The promenade links Torre Abbey Sands, Abbey Sands, the marina and harbour, and local bus services can help with longer journeys around Torbay.

For Paignton and Brixham, buses are often the simplest option, while the train is useful for arriving in Torquay and for trips along the Riviera line. Boats from the harbour can also be a pleasant way to see the coastline or travel across the bay in season. Taxis are readily available for an occasional evening journey or a return trip that feels too far uphill.

Before booking, check three practical details: the distance from Torquay railway station, the gradient of the route to the seafront or harbour, and whether breakfast is available. Free Wi-Fi and a guest fridge can also make a car-free stay easier, giving you the flexibility to check timetables and keep a few drinks or picnic items handy.

A little thought about location will leave you free to enjoy the best part of a Torquay break: an unhurried walk by the sea, with everything you need close enough to reach under your own steam.
